School has a sense of calm about it. You always believe that there is time yet for the big things in life. When you enter high school, you tell yourself that you still have four good years ahead of you before you are ejected from the safety of the school’s hallways. When you finally get to your twelfth year of education, you soothe your nerves by arguing that you still have about twelve months to go before you are made to don your high school graduation gown. Soon you find yourself staring the ceremony right in the face, your gown tucked up around you and your graduation caps standing proud on your head. Tears flow, songs are sung, cheers are sounded and applause deftly dealt at the ceremony.
This is when the feeling comes home; this is when you realize that you are no longer in school. In fact, you also realize that from now on the chances of you going back to school as slimmer than a supermodel’s waist at this particular moment. For years, you complained about having to attend school. You told anyone and everyone with a sturdy pair of ears (or even a single piece, so long as it worked) all about your scholastic woes, but at the back of your head, you always knew that you weren’t being completely truthful. You only openly accept your love for school life once you are out of it, and that is the truth, believe me. But college life has its own rewards too. Everything should be taken as it comes, and nothing should be not enjoyed because of what came before it. College life will show you things no school can. Graduating out of high school, wearing your graduation hat is not quite like graduating out of preschool. Oh sure, you had to wear a preschool graduation gowns even back then, but the transition is not quite the same. Where school brings with a sense of restraint, college cuts your chains lose and expects you to make your own decisions. You will be given assignments just like in school, but the completion of these assignments will not always be as mandatory as the scholastic counterparts. College students are considered to be responsible adults, so you will find fewer people telling you what to do. Of course, universities with a proud past might be a little more controlling, but at least the decision of attending such universities depends on your own good judgment. You may even find yourself going for part-time jobs to up the ante for your competitors by adding a few bonus items on your curriculum vitae.
School certainly has no competitors when it comes to shaping a person, but college is equally important and bestows a completely different set of lessons on students. It is wise to cherish your memories, but it is also wise to move forwards. Attending college faithfully symbolizes the movement of life. A caterpillar must eventually become a butterfly.
