And for those in Europe who enjoy playing no limit Texas hold em and other poker games in a casino setting, the Palais Stephanie in Cannes has reopened.
Tucked between the Mediterranean Sea and the imposing Southern Alps, Palais Stéphanie reopens following the most extensive renovation of any hotel in Cannes in decades. The 38-million Euro renovation has completely transformed this classic hotel into a vibrant and stylish hotspot incorporating modern design elements reflecting its glamorous film heritage. The hotel is enviously located in the center of the famous La Croisette just steps from the beach, with breathtaking views of the Bay of Cannes and the Lerins Islands. You’ll have a difficult time even staying at the poker table knowing what’s outside.
Palais Stéphanie sits on the original site of the Palais des Congrs, where the first Cannes Film Festivals were held until the new Palais des Festivals was inaugurated in 1983. The dramatic redesign of the hotel pays tribute to the legendary film stars of festivals past, such as Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, and Liz Taylor, whose timeless glamour accentuate the Palais’ design. For business travelers, Palais Stéphanie offers an 820-seat auditorium, suitable for any type of professional gathering or high-profile film screening. In addition, the hotel offers 16 meeting rooms with 12,900 square-feet of flexible space. Much different than playing poker online.

In another small MTT I reached the final table with some online poker chips. I was right in the middle of the field. 7 places paid and the final table consisted of 10 players. By staying out of the way and not picking up any great cards, I was able to make it to the money relatively easily. However, I was blinding down. When we got down to 6 online poker players I had about 17K and the blinds were 600/1200. The big stack had over 100,000 chips. He raised my big bind to 3,600. Everyone folded and I looked down at AQ off-suit. With only about 15BBs, I decided the best move was to shove all-in. It might look like a re-steal, which would be great if I could get the big stack to call me with a lesser ace on that assumption. Also, there are only a few hands that have me in serious trouble. If my opponent has a small pair he might fold, or at worst I’m a 50/50. I was called by the big tack and he had AK. Oh no! I got caught. But wait! Is that a Queen on the flop?! It sure was. I doubled up to about 35K and was now in comfortable position, 3rd of the 6 remaining poker online players. The player to my immediate right was playing vey weak. I had him covered by about 10K, but if I lost an all-in to him, I would be crippled. In a small blind big blind confrontation he 3x’d the blind. I looked down at 66 and shoved over the top of him. He claimed that he folded 8s, which I doubt, but this also gave me confidence that he was a very conservative player. A few hands later he limped into my BB. He’d lost a few hands and I had him about 2-1 in chips and decided to shove on him with ace high. There was a large chance that I was ahead and he might be frustrated enough to call my bet. He again folded and announced his frustration in the chat box. Someone else got knocked out, and then I picked up AK. There was a 3x raise to 3600 and I shoved for 29K. The player who raised had about 40K chips and was in 2nd place. He insta-called the 26K more and tabled 99. I failed to hit my overs and he actually improved to a set. I was out in 5th place.

You’ll go through it just like everyone else. You are not that unique and special snowflake at the poker table your parents told you that you were when you were little. And inevitably you’ll get dealt a long stretch of bad cards that are just unplayable.
So this little ditty will tell you how to deal with that, both strategically ad emotionally.
First, let’s talk emotionally. Don’t let it get to you. The poker gods don’t hate you, and you didn’t do something wrong in a past life to get this bad run. It’s just something that happens when you’re dealing with random shuffles. So don’t fret about it. Learn to not care, and while you’re at it, learn to love to fold.
Now, let’s talk strategy. A bad run of cards can ruin the strategy of even the most seasoned player. They start to get impatient and start wanting to jump into pots and play. After all that’s why you’re there, right? To play poker online? Well, yes and no. You are there to play, but you’re there to play solid online poker.
Sure you may be able to mix up your game and after folding for three orbits straight pull a 3bet bluff with a marginal hand on the cut off, but don’t start trying to chase and play like a fish. It’s just not profitable.
I actually saw a man the other day that was the perfect example of playing with a bad run of cards. He played about 8 orbits losing of his stack folding. Finally he wakes up with a pair of deuces that end up tripping on the flop. He shoves all in, calls his round, quadruples up, and leaves.
I tell that story to remind you that there’s always the option of leaving if you’re totally on a bad run. So just remember, no one hates you, it’s just another facet of the game.

There is an old saying in poker, “Never go broke with just one pair.” Though, sure, when you flop the top pair and have a strong kicker, you are likely ahead, in the face of heavy action, there are a very wide range of hands that have you crushed. Two pair, a set, a straight or flush (if the board allows it)all of these hands are hands you could get raised with, and will have you drawing slim to win the pot (not to mention overpairs and top pairs with better kickers).
And yet so often you’ll see players willing to put their whole stack at risk just, say, with top pair top kicker. It can be hard for some people to see the possibilities the board allows and to give their poker opponent credit for those hands.
One of the great differentiations from a moderately successful player to a long term winner is that the long term winner will be able to lay down those big but not big enough hands in the right spots, slipping their way out of the noose.
More often, then, in spots where you might raise with top pair, sometimes it is more profitable just to call and take a card off, see if your opponent’s actions continue to represent that you’ll need more than one pair to take the money. Keep this in mind if you play poker online.

When faced at a table with a online poker player who plays like a ‘mouse,’ in that they only play the nuts and won’t put money at risk without a monster, the general pattern of response is to play careful, but heavily aggressive poker. Because in the long run more hands will miss their aim than they will make it, often by sheer power of raising and reraising the meeker players, you will be able to make them lay down even when you have no hand.
For the most part, with the most meek and strategically disinterested mouse-style online poker players, you will know when you are beat, in that, when they raise, if you don’t have the nuts, you are almost always behind. Folding top pair top kicker on the flop against a meek player who suddenly check raises after hours of not making a player is by all means a move that is worthwhile to make. Often, against these players that won’t put in a dime without having it, you have to be able to give them credit for the hand when they finally step up and represent it. Continuing to bluff when they show strength is often also a sure sign of troubleare they the kind of player that will let you take the lead when they are ahead? Or are they actually drawing at a hand for once?
Regardless of which, it is best to keep up your online poker style and aggressive pitch against meek players until given reason to do otherwise. Often they will let you take down pot after pot in the mind of: waiting for the big one, at which point you can just fold out.

In high stakes online poker they all agreed to show one of their cards if they won a pot. At first, it was the winning player’s choice of the card to show at the casino online, but then the losers and others at the table started calling for certain cards. Eventually, the dealer was given the license to turn one card up at random after the pot was scooped.
In some card and online poker rooms there is a “show one show both” rule. This is not to be confused with the “show one show all” rule where a player showing his cards to one player must then show everyone. In “show one show both” a player is forced to table both of his cards if he exposes one of them. I assume this was so people could not try to tilt people after they won a pot by giving off the illusion that they had bluffed or had a much weaker hand than they actually did. The player’s deciding to show one card usually had a strategic means for doing so, and the rule was made so that the end of the hand marked the end of the bluffing…I suppose. Most card rooms do not have this rule in place. If an opponent wants to show one card, they are giving information away for free. Who would argue with that?
So in this agreement, the players were first allowed to choose their exposed card. Once feathers began to ruffle, they decided that the dealer would choose a random card. This led to information that some players may not have given otherwise. Sometimes it exposed the nuts, sometimes a possible bluff, and sometimes a definite bluff.
Knowing one of your opponents cards after the fact does not help you at all in the hand that was just finished. There’s no getting your cards out of the muck and making a deal. If you were bluffed, you now have to live with losing the hand and knowing you were bluffed. But the information can be useful to future hands in this session or possibly at another point in time. Any information is good information. A lot of times if you see one card, you can make a good guess about the other. But keep in mind, if a player decides to show you a particular card they probably have a reason for doing so.

Poker is a game of both skill and luck. Seasoned players know how to count outs and odds to maximize their opportunities and luck. But newcomers to the game often just rely on luck, and get swept up in the fun and action of the game. And sure enough, many new players often hit “beginners luck” when they start playing.
Beginners luck is a phenomenon recognized in all games of chance. It is both a curse and blessing. For the amateur poker player who does not understand the long odds against making an inside straight or full house, the fun is in trying. These are players who keep betting right up until the last card, and then put a bad beat on a good player holding a made hand like trips, only to see it trounced by the amateur’s gut shot draw.
For beginners willing to gamble a certain amount, the game is fun and, when they do win against improbable odds, they’re apt to be back another time – only to lose. And though the myth is that these players are easy pickings for savvy players, that is not always the case. Bad play by amateur poker players creates chaos for strategic players.
For the most part amateurs do act like ATMs for seasoned players, but any smart player should beware of the nave newcomer who pursues an improbable hand. When beginners luck goes their way, bad beats are bound to materialize at the table.

Brunson’s done it before. You know, playing by feeling. Just the situation of the thing. This isn’t a move for the faint of heart, and it’s definitely not a move for novices to pull. But there are players who will play on circumstances alone. Here’s the basics. In a game of poker, you get your cards, you leave them face down, and you don’t peak at all. What you’re doing is playing off of the other player’s betting patterns. This requires total knowledge and awareness of all the nuances of the game. Betting patterns, position, player profiles, blinds, pot. You’re paying attention to everything but your cards. And then you act accordingly. And this, this can strike FEAR into the hearts of your opponents. An example: You’re in middle position. You get checks all around to you. Well, the first few players theoretically shouldn’t have much. So you decided to make a bet. You’ve created a lot of controversy. Your opponents can’t put you on anything, because you don’t even know what you’re on. The people acting after you, have to make a bet on your bet, not your cards. This is totally unreadable. So let’s say you get a couple of callers. Flop comes 8s-7s-5h You’ve still not looked, and it’s again checked to you. Continuation bet time. 2x the pot. Again, the confusion is still there. And you’re gaining more and more information the whole time. With this flop you either have a straight or flush possibility, or two overs. Again, you’re paying attention to the betting, not your poker hand. If they just a little, they’re still unsure. If they fold. Good, you won with minimal effort. They go all in or bet high, then it’s time to look at your cards. But let’s say they just call again. You’re getting exactly what you want here. And you look like you have balls of steel (excuse me ladies, ovaries of steel if it appiles) Turn comes As. Now, good chance of flush draw, and maybe you hit one of your overs. This will be the deciding card. From here, you may bet again, or you may just check. Either way, you’re not giving anything away, you still don’t know your cards. It’s still all about the action going on. Your ability to read the bets of your opponents is far more important anyway. You decide to bet. You just get a call. You can be pretty certain you opponent here has a weak hand. poker!
